What is ‘Neuromodulation’?

Neuromodulation is a process that changes the physiological states of neuronal networks

This can be done pharmacologically or electrically, and it affects the way in which the nervous system responds to a set of sensory inputs. For example, one’s mood routinely affects the ways in which we respond to our environment. Our device electronically neuromodulates the spinal cord to change its excitability and its response to therapeutic methods.

Unlike muscle stimulators that serve to activate individual muscles, our neuromodulation technology raises the excitability of the spinal cord, bringing neurons closer to the activation threshold. In other words, our device is making it easier for motor activation, but is not doing all the work for the user. This means the user is truly doing the work themselves, which leads to learning.

How are we changing the spinal cord?

We are just at the beginning of understanding the relationship between cerebral palsy and the spinal cord. However, it is extremely promising to see the results we’ve had, and they inspire us to push forward to find even more breakthroughs.

The Future

Our Cerebral Palsy Therapy Philosophy

Self-discovery

Our treatment philosophy for patients while using neuromodulation is using age-appropriate and child-driven therapy activities for treatment. We want them to try new activities they previously avoided due to difficulty. The activities are chosen by the child, but they often require a therapist’s assistance to be successful. Making mistakes is a big part of the process, so we like to let the child try first, then ask if they would like any help and give our input.

Neuromodulation

This method allows them to naturally learn to move with neuromodulation on. Children tell us they become more focused using spinal neuromodulation, and they work even harder to accomplish the chosen task, even if it is only initiating the movement. There is an intrinsic reward when the child can initiate and complete a movement towards their self-selected goal. Whether it be pushing a button (fine motor) or jumping rope (gross motor), this agency leads to their self-confidence improving.

Natural improvement

Over time these new motor skills become easier and more automatic. It’s very rewarding for the child, the parent, and the therapists, which amplifies motivation even more at each session. It makes therapy exciting!
